How To Clean Your Bong with Common Household Items - D’s Iso Method

by pH(x) Pipes

(This process assumes you don’t want to save any resin)
Materials: All you really need are these two things.

  • Isopropyl alcohol (91% or better)
  • Sea Salt

But, if your shit is caked on, you will need additional, often homemade, tools.  More on that later.
First thing you want to do is remove the down stem and slide from your bong and pour out the water.
Set the down stem and slide to the side and let’s focus on the bong.

  • Pour sea salt down the tube and into the bottom.  I like to completely cover every bit of visible resin with sea salt.  The salt should stick to the resin with no problem.

Now set the bong aside and let the sea salt sit on that resin while we move to the down stem and slide. You could cover what parts you can with sea salt, and I recommend you do so.  But often times this isn’t really possible, which is ok. Take a plastic cup or Tupperware container, one big enough for your down stem and slide to fit in.

  • Place slide and down stem in container and fill container with isopropyl alcohol

Let those soak in the alcohol while we go back to the bong where the salt has been setting in the resin that’s stuck inside your bong.

  • Proceed to pour isopropyl alcohol down your bong and in the bottom.
  • Cover/ plug the openings of your bong with your hand or an actual plug
  • Get a REALLY TIGHT grip on your bong
  • Proceed to shake your bong like shit.

This mixes the sea salt and isopropyl alcohol together and destroys the resin that was once stuck to your bong. Rubber gloves wouldn’t hurt if you’re struggling with slippage.
Stop shaking and do a careful visual check.  Check to make sure every spec of resin is no longer stuck to your bong.  It should look like a clean bong with really dirty liquid in it.   If this is not the case and you still see stuck on resin, keep shaking.  If the resin is REALLY caked on, you may need to do another round of isopropyl alcohol and sea salt.

  • Rinse with water 5+ times.  All the resin should be washed out and you should be looking at a clean bong.

You may find that your bong looks a little cloudy.  This is where I spray a round of window cleaner down the bong, as you would pour the isopropyl alcohol.  Wash that out 5+ times and your bong will shine and sparkle like new.

Now let’s go back to the down stem and slide that were soaking in isopropyl alcohol.

  • After the isopropyl alcohol soak, a simple rinse of warm water should wash away 90+% of the resin stuck to your down stem and slide.

If you still see resin stuck to your glass after the rinse of water.  Grab a Q-tip and dip the end in the alcohol that they were soaking in and wipe that resin right off with the q-tip.  If the Q-tip is not long enough, a straw or the shell of an ink pen works perfectly as an extender. The cloudiness in the down stem and the slide won’t be as noticeable as it was in the bong, so the window cleaner wash probably won’t be necessary for those two.

That’s it though.  Just make sure everything is thoroughly rinsed with water and enjoy your sparkling, like new bong!
